Also known as "tenoroon" was still commonly used in military music in the 19th century and is in fact an ideal tenor instrument in any wind band- or ensemble. It is pitched a 4th higher than the standard bassoon and relates to it like a descant recorder to a treble. In this context, coming from the recorder it is not difficult to play without transposed parts but naturally any part in F can be used equally using standard bassoon fingerings. Because it weighs only 1.2 kg it is ideal for those who are too small or not strong enough to handle a full size bassoon, weighing as much as 8kg.
